During the 88th General Assembly (Act 304 of 2011), the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) was passed for the following purpose:
(1) Enhancing patient care by providing prescription monitoring information that will ensure legitimate use of controlled substances in health care, including palliative care, research, and other medical pharmacological uses; (2) Helping curtail the misuse and abuse of controlled substances; (3) Assisting in combating illegal trade in and diversion of controlled substances; and (4) Enabling access to prescription information by practitioners, law enforcement agents, and other authorized individuals and agencies and to make prescription information available to practitioners, law enforcement agents, and other authorized individuals and agencies in other states.
At the Arkansas Department of Health (ADH) rules and regulations public hearing on January 8, 2013, only one association was represented: Arkansas State Dental Association. Only one question was asked and it was from your ASDA. The question related to ensuring the information you submit as a practitioner would be protected and unable to be misused. ADH assured the attendees that it has a proven record of protecting information. Subchapters 20-7-606 and 20-7-607 explain confidentiality (click here).
In addition Arkansas State Dental Association is afforded a dentist member to the PDMP advisory committee. Be assured, ASDA will work hard to monitor this new and potentially useful tool for you and your practice.
